Singapore’s Men will be travelling to Hong Kong for the Asia Rugby Olympic Qualifiers today, 5th
November 2015. After completing the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2015 last month, Singapore is currently ranked
as one of the top 7 teams in Asia. The team even capped off their best performance ever at the Societe Generale
Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Rugby 7s 2015 by reaching the Plates Quarter Finals last weekend.
Singapore’s Men will look to carry on their good form at the Asia Rugby Olympic Qualifiers where they are
grouped with South Korea, China, Chinese Taipei and Rugby World Cup Nation, Japan.
Technical Director of Singapore Rugby Union, Mr Inoke Afeaki said, “Singapore Rugby has gone through a rebuilding phase after the South East Asian Games. We have a few new faces in the squad now and the team had bonded really well. Looking at the positive results from Asia Rugby Sevens Series and SCC 7s, this team demonstrated great potential and I am very excited to see how far their development will bring them. The Asia Rugby Olympic Qualifiers will provide these players the opportunity to play against the best in Asia! ”
The Asia Rugby Olympic Qualifiers will take place in Hong Kong on 7-8th November 2015. Only the winners of the tournament will qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games in Brazil, where rugby returns since 1924. Of the berths available in Rio, the top four sides in the 2014-15 Sevens World Series will take a spot each, the next six are filled by regional qualifiers, and the remaining places go to hosts Brazil and the winners of a World Rugby repêchage event.
Singapore’s Women will also be competing internationally this weekend. Singapore’s Women and Development teams are invited to compete in the Bangkok International Rugby 7s where they will gain more exposure from teams outside of Singapore.
