The Lunar New Year festive goodies were well and truly burnt off this weekend, as the heat and intensity picked up as the competition restarted after a short break. The World First Premiership Match of the Week kicked off the weekend, with Bucks XV playing in its successive Friday night game. They were up against the World First Lions who were looking a little light on the bench and gave opportunities to a host of young promising players that night.

The second week of the World First Premiership and Challenge Cup did not start off on a bright note with the scheduled live streamed game between Wanderers and the World First Lions on Friday night being rescheduled due to rain. There were no such problems on Saturday though, as the remainder of the World First Premiership games went ahead as scheduled.

Running concurrently to the World First Premiership is the World First Challenge Cup. The SCC Tankards seemed to be off to a good start after the holiday break, fresh off their league and cup wins in 2015. They overran Bedok Kings 2s in week one and could have got more on the scoreboard if they had made all their kicks. The battle of the Padang against the Growlers will not lack passion or punch for sure. The Growlers will look to bounce back from their loss to the Bucks in week one. Look for Tankard’s Captain Sam Flint to lead from the front against very seasoned experience.

World First Premiership and World First Challenge Cup: Week 1 Review and Results

The World First Premiership and World First Challenge Cup started off with a bang last weekend with great high scoring action in week one across all games.

The SCC Rugby Section continued their dominance from 2015 with massive wins in all their games. A massive 84-10 win by their 1st XV  in the World First Premiership welcomed rugby back to the Padang over a youthful Bedok Kings side. Kings were definitely playing the youth card in spades as the likes of youth internationals Benjamin Broughton and Maverick Lim acquitting themselves with polished performances. It was great to see National 7s Player Ho Yishu back on the pitch after being absent from rugby due to National Service commitment as well. Ho was a standout during the 2015 SEA Games and his play on Saturday showed that he just needs more game time to maximize his potential. SCC on the other hand came out with all guns blazing and showed their class and intent for the coming Premiership season. Given that the SCC have not won a Premiership knockout title since the early 1990s, the early signs are promising for the Padang Boys. Michael Oliver looks to be a key addition for them, the scrum half adding some pace to proceedings and accurate goal kicking.
